Speech and Language / EAL

Hello - I'm Mrs. Lloyd-Hill and I run the speech and language sessions with the children at Meadowlane Primary School.

We have lots of fun in our sessions and I always encourage the children to practise at home with their parents/carers or even friends.

I will be posting lots of fun games you can play to help support your children, as well as webiste that could be useful for you and them.

Some great ways to communicate with little ones, check out these basic BSL signs and Makaton greetings.

Some children with speech sound difficulties have low phonological awareness. Phonological awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in spoken language. Have a look at these skills – can your child do these?

How confusing that one verb can have so many meanings in the English language; no wonder it is difficult for our children to learn! You can support your child's understanding of what you say by using signing, gestures and/or visuals alongside your spoken message. Keep your message short and clear to ensure understanding.

💬🙌 When your child uses a sound or gesture to tell you something, give them the word they would say if they could e.g. ‘car stuck’, ‘more juice’. This helps your child see that you want to understand them and helps them learn words for what they want to say. Modelling back the correct word and sounds will help your child correct any mistakes in their hearing. However it is important not to say "No, you say...." as the child isn't always receptive to the change in sound used.

Remember to Tune in with your child in their play time by following these simple techniques. These can help improve so many important skills in your child as well as build positive relationships.

This week we are thinking about "Understanding".

💬 Talk with me while we play! 👀 Observe how your child plays and listen to their sounds and words. 🙌 Join in by copying their sounds and actions and talking with your child about what they are interested in and playing with. This will help them learn words and enjoy 1 to 1 playtime with you! Here are some activities you can do with your child... #speechandlanguage #flyingstartcardiff #earlyyears #learningtotalk #earlycommunication #specialtime

💬 The Speech and Language Team’s Topic is... 🎤🎶 Singing 🙌 Singing nursery rhymes with your little one is fun, particularly when you do the actions. Children like hearing the same rhymes again and again. Pause in the song to see if your child joins in or asks for more by looking, gesturing or vocalising. As soon as they respond, continue singing straight away. #speechandlanguage #flyingstartcardiff #earlyyears #learningtotalk #earlycommunication #singing

Questions are important, so is giving children time to process and answer.
